City Winery Chicago presents Alfonzo Jones & the Universal Sonic Diaspora live on Tuesday, January 21st at 7:30 PM.

Alfonzo Jones’ love of music began in the most organic way possible—at church, watching the drummer intently and mimicking every sound and move by the age of three. His passion became so intense that after repeatedly wearing out his mother’s and grandmother’s pots and pans, they bought him his first drum set. From that moment on, Alfonzo was hooked. He spent countless hours playing along to tapes and videos, meticulously studying every drummer he encountered.

Alfonzo’s journey truly took off during high school under the mentorship of Phillip Crews. He developed a wide range of influences, drawing inspiration from legendary drummers like Dennis Chambers, Tony Williams, Carter Beauford, Elvin Jones, and Jimmy Cobb. His ability to blend diverse styles has been a hallmark of his evolving sound.

Throughout his career, Alfonzo has become known for his versatility across genres, sharing the stage with notable artists including Wynton Marsalis, Brian Courtney Wilson, James Fortune, Vickie Winans, Wycliffe Gordon, Orbert Davis, Martha Munizzi, Tye Tribbett, Kierra Sheard, Pinqy Ring, and more. His performances span from his childhood church, Liberty Temple Full Gospel Church, to playing alongside dynamic acts like Left.Jones, Mike Zabrin’s Funktastic, National recording artist Nikki Lynette, and The O’My’s.

Alfonzo’s dream is not just to leave a legacy through his music but also to impact others through his character and generosity. As he continues to be an inspiration for aspiring drummers and musicians, Alfonzo Jones is well on his way to solidifying his mark in the world of music and beyond.
